프렌즈 시즌2 : 18화 영어 표현 be in order, we connect

 

영어공부 하시나요? 저도 그렇습니다. 시트콤 <프렌즈>를 10회 시청을 목표로 8회 차 정주행 중입니다. 가장 먼저 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하면서 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다. 처음에는  10회 차까지 반복하게 되면 무척 질릴 것이라고 생각했습니다. 분명 그런 시간이 있었지만, 이제는 정이 들어서 또 봐도 재밌고, 여전히 새롭게 보이는 부분이 있고, 시즌10이 끝나면 아쉽기도 합니다. 작별인사 하면서 울기도 몇 번 울었습니다. 이처럼 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유합니다. :)

시즌 2: 18화 "라모레이 박사의 죽음" 줄거리 ▼

챈들러는 새로운 룸메이트 에디와 친해지려고 노력합니다. 같이 대화를 하면서 친해졌는데, 그와 이야기를 하면서 집착하는 성격을 보고  약간은 섬찟한 기분을 느낍니다. 센트럴 퍼크에서 피비의 노래를 듣던 친구들. 피비가 리처드에게 모니카가 만났던 모든 남자들 중에서 리처드가 제일 좋다고 얘기합니다. 호기심이 든 리처드는 모니카에게 대체 몇 명의 남자를 만나왔는지 묻습니다. 레이첼과 로스도 서로에게 몇 명의 애인을 만났는지 묻고, 로스는 그의 질투심이 도져서 레이첼의 전 남자친구 파울로에 대해 이것저것 따집니다. 조이는 드라마가 잘 돼 가자 소프오페라 다이제스트에 인터뷰가 실리는데, 자신이 대사를 직접 작성한다고 억지를 부렸다가 드라마에서 엘리베이터에서 떨어져 죽음을 맞는 결말을 맞이합니다. 

Joey's good fortune comes crashing down when he foolishly claims in an interview for Soap Opera Digest that he writes all his own lines on Days of Our Lives, angering the script writer who then kills off Joey's character. Phoebe's attempt to help Chandler bond with his new roommate ends up revealing Eddie's quirky behaviour. Sexual history dominates a discussion between two couples—Monica and Richard, and Ross and Rachel.

Phoebe: Are we not getting along with the new boy?

Candler: No, he's all right.

아니, 사람은 괜찮은데

Phoebe: Maybe that's because you haven't
taken the time to get to know him.
네가 친해지려고 노력을 안 한 거겠지
Let's remedy that, shall we?
같이 해결해 볼까?

(룸메이트 에디의 전 여자친구 틸리와 대화하는 챈들러...)

Tily: I gather by that 'Oh,'
that he told you about me.
반응을 보아하니 제 얘기를 들으셨나 보네요

Chandler: Yeah, your, name came up, and...
어쩌다 이름이 나왔는데
in a conversation that
terrified me to my very soul.
뼛속까지 소름 돋을 정도로 무서운 얘기였죠

Tily: He's kind of intense.
사람이 좀 무섭죠? 

 

gather:

1. : to collect several things, often from different places or people
   
2. Intense는 여기서 "직설적이고, 열정적이고, 강하고, 에너지가 넘치고, 성질이 급한" 사람을 뜻합니다. 

•  I went to several libraries to gather information about the plans.
  
• She gathered up the newspapers that were scattered around the floor.
  
• We gathered our things together and left quickly.
• People are intimidated by her because she's intense but she's really just passionate about her work. (사람들은 그녀가 성격이 강하기 때문에 겁을 먹지만 그녀는 자신의 일에 대해 열정적이다.)

(모니카에게 교제했던 남자가 몇 명인지 묻는 리차드...)

Richard: Whoa, no, wait a minute now!
잠깐만, 거기 서 봐
Come on, it's your turn.
너도 말해 줘야지
Oh, come on!
얼른 말해 봐
You know, I don't need the
actual number. Just a ballpark.
구체적인 숫자가 아니더라도 그 언저리쯤 얘기해 봐

Monica: Okay, it is definitely less than a ballpark.
야구장을 채울 정도는 아니에요

He's not a big fan of foosball. 피비가 왜 룸메이트 에디랑 같이 table foosball 안하냐고 물으니까 그가 그런 타입이 아니라고 설명하는 챈들러
Better not be doing these in order.몇명이나 사귀어봤는지 레이첼에게 물어보자, 레이첼은 가장 먼저 로스를 이야기한다. 그러자 로스는 이렇게 응답하는데~ 순서대로 말할 필요없다는 뜻이다
*be in order: 순서대로 되어 있다
What you and I have is so much better. Okay, we have tenderness, we have intimacy, we connect. You know? I swear. This is the best I have ever had.  로스가 레이첼과 파울로 사이의 관계에서 질투를 느끼자 로스에게 그와의 관계를 설명하는 레이첼. 지금까지 중 최고. 로스의 대답은 "Until now."
*connect: to feel close to someone or have a good relationship with them.
Yeah. Joey, honey, I don't know if this'll mean anything to you, but you'll always be pre-approved with us. 조이에게 너는 언제나 우리에게 사전 자격이 주어질 거라고 위로하는 레이첼. 조이의 대답 No, that means nothing to me. 조이는 대사를 직접 쓴다고 과장해서 말하고 다녀서 드라마에서 배역이 죽게되고 너무 실망해서 집에서 끙끙대는 와중에 친구들이 달려와서 위로를 해준다
