프렌즈 시즌9: 8화 영어 표현 take a hint, act your age

시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도 그렇습니다. 10회 시청을 목표로 7회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다.
이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 그만큼 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유합니다. ^^

시즌 9: 8화 "위기의 추수 감사절" 줄거리 ▼

에마의 첫 번째 추수감사절! 레이첼과 로스의 집에 레이첼의 철부지 동생 에이미가 찾아와 헤어 스트레이너를 빌려달라고 합니다. 설상가상으로 그녀의 데이트 취소까지 겹쳐서 좌절하는 상황. 레이첼은 그런 에이미를 모니카와 친구들의 추수감사절 식사에 함께 데려가 기로 합니다. 모니카와 챈들러의 비싼 접시를 두고 식사를 하는 친구들. 에이미는 만약 로스와 레이첼이 죽으면 그녀가 에마를 돌보는 설정에 취합니다. 그러나 상상의 나래를 깨고 레이첼이 한 마디 덧붙입니다. 만약 자신들이 죽는다면 에마는 모니카와 챈들러의 손에 맡길 거라고요. 격분한 에이미와 감동한 모니카 챈들러 커플. 상상은 좀 더 깊게 들어가 모니카가 죽는다면 챈들러가 아이를 맡는 게 아니라 로스의 부모님의 손에 맡기겠다고 합니다. 실망한 챈들러와 여전히 화가 난 에이미. 에이미는 레이첼에게 시비를 걸어 결국 두 사람은 싸우고 맙니다. 에마가 별로 귀엽지도 않다고 홧김에 한 말이 레이첼을 자극했죠. 두 사람의 싸움은 접시를 하나 깨버리고 화가난 챈들러가 모니카에게 사과하고 서로 사과하라 하자 상황은 종료됩니다. 다행히 로스에게 에마를 맡길 수도 있겠다는 대답도 얻고요. 추수 감사절은 어떻게 마무리 됐을까요?

Rachel's sister Amy (Christina Applegate) unexpectedly shows up for Thanksgiving Dinner. Her arrival prompts a big fight over Emma's custody if, hypothetically, Rachel and Ross passed away, though they have already chosen Monica and Chandler. Amy asks if she would get the baby if Monica also died; in that event, Ross and Rachel have also decided that Emma would go to Ross' parents, upsetting Chandler, who believes that Ross and Rachel do not trust him. Meanwhile, Monica obsesses over her expensive china plates, and Phoebe coaches Joey on how to lie after Joey forgets to go to the Thanksgiving parade for Days of Our Lives.

Ross: Yeah, and we wanna make sure
that Emma also has some like Monica
who's more of a disciplinarian.
Someone who can be firm and strict.


Monica: That's not how you see me, is it?

Ross: Dude, well done.
You know what, if I die
and Rachel dies and Monica dies
you can totally take care of Emma.

Chandler: Oh, yeah? Well, thanks.

Ross: So, so now do I get Joey?

Chandler: Okay, but you should know he eats five times a day
and shoves pennies up his nose.

회차 감상 소감 ▼

에이미는 예고 없이 등장해 큰 영향을 미치는 캐릭터입니다. 엉뚱하고 철없는데 제 동생이 아니라 그저 웃습니다. 레이첼은 그런 그녀를 보듬어 주고 바른 길로 유도해 주려고 하는데, 그걸 보면 어느 나라든 첫째가 책임감으로 동생들을 지도하려는 성향이 있구나 느낍니다.  규율을 잘 지키고 때로는 엄격한 성격의 모니카는 부모로서 이상적인 성향이 아닐까 싶습니다. 

 

 

Honey, she keeps canceling on us. Take the hint. (영국 여왕이 올 때를 위해 비싼 접시 안쓰고 아껴둔다니까 받아치는 챈들러)
   *take a hint: to understand or do something that is communicated indirectly
   *I’ve tried to get him to leave, but he can’t take a hint.
What is the point of having them if we never use them? (여전히 비싼 접시라 깨지면 어쩌냐고 아까워서 못쓰겠다는 모니카의 말에 훈수두는 챈들러)
Well, no offense, honey, but your taste is a little feminine for me. (챈들러가 같이 고른 접시가 바뀐 것 같다니까 그의 취향이 약간 여성스럽다고 비꼬는 모니카)
