프렌즈 시즌2 : 7화 영어 표현 closure, a shoulder to cry on

 
시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도 그렇습니다. 10회 시청을 목표로 8회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다.
이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 시즌 1부터 시작해서 시즌 10까지 한 바퀴를 다 돌고 나면 그만큼 아쉽기도 합니다. 이처럼 저는 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유합니다. ^^

시즌 2: 7화 "드러난 진실" 줄거리 ▼
레이첼은 로스를 잊고 이성적으로 살겠다고 친구들 앞에서 선언합니다. 그리고 모니카가 연결해 준 데이트 상대와 데이트를 합니다. 그러나 로스와 줄리가 키우겠다는 고양이 생각이 머릿속에서 떠나질 않아서 데이트에 집중을 못합니다. 레이첼의 데이트 상대는 기막힌 방법을 알려주는데, 그건 바로 '감정 정리'였습니다. 그 단어를 듣자마자 레이첼은 이거다 싶은 나머지 로스에게 전화를 걸어 음성 메시지를 남깁니다. 로스를 잊었다는 얘기였습니다.
챈들러는 살을 빼기위해 모니카의 지도 아래 열심히 운동을 합니다. 그러나 모니카가 워낙 열성적이어서 과도한 운동으로 의지를 상실하고 맙니다. 일요일 오전에도 운동하자고 하고, 회사에서도 괄약근을 조이고 앉아 있으라는 모니카의 지도아래 숨 막혀하던 챈들러는 수를 씁니다. 실직 상황의 모니카를 우울하게 만들어서 낮잠을 자도록 말입니다. 
로스는 잠시 모니카의 집에 들렸다가 자신의 집으로 들어온 음성 메시지를 듣고, 레이첼이 자신을 잊었다고 얘기한 것을 알게 됩니다. 그리고 언제부터 레이첼이 자신에 대해 호감을 품었는지 묻고 혼란스럽게 대화하다 결국 줄리에게 돌아갑니다. 머지않아 로스는 레이첼에게 돌아오고서 따집니다. 줄리와 잘 지내고 있었는데 불쑥 들어온 그녀의 마음에 대해서 말입니다. 그리고 레이첼과 로스는 말다툼을 하다가, 로스가 고양이를 사지 않았다는 걸 알게 되고, 두 사람은 키스합니다. 

Rachel goes on a date but after drinking too much wine, obsesses about Ross. Her date suggests she needs closure, so Rachel leaves a message on Ross' answering machine claiming she is "over" him. After hearing it the next morning, a stunned Ross wrestles with choosing her or Julie. Next, he visits a pet shop with Julie, where he shall choose between two cats Julie has shortlisted for him, a task that utterly overstrains him.[4] Chandler gains a few pounds, so a depressed, out-of-work Monica volunteers to be his personal trainer, going overboard in the process. Phoebe takes Joey's advice when her new boyfriend is reluctant to sleep with her, only to have it backfire. Ross, upset and citing numerous reasons, tells Rachel it is too late for them to be together and he is staying with Julie. At the end of the episode, Ross goes to see Rachel at the coffee shop as she is closing up, and they passionately kiss.

Chandler: Okay. What is it about me?
Do I not look fun enough?
대체 내 어떤 점이 문제야?
그렇게 재미없어 보여?

Is there something repellent about me?
타인에게 혐오감을 심어주는 특징이라도 있는 거야?

Ross: So, how was the party?
파티는 어땠어?

Chandler: It couldn't have been worse.
이보다 최악은 없을걸

 
repellent : 

1. making you feel strong disapproval and that you do not want to be involved with someone or something:

• Their political ideas are repellent to most people.
• Cheating and lying are repellent to most people.
• I find any cruelty to children utterly repellent.

Scene 2

(친구들에게 로스는 잊고 데이트 하겠다고 얘기하는 레이첼...)

Joey: Now, what about Ross and...
그러면 로스랑은 어떻게...

Rachel: What?
My whole insane jealousy thing?
왜? 내가 미친 듯이 질투해서?

Well, you know,
as much fun as that was...
그것도 재미있긴 했지만

I've  decided to opt for sanity.
난 이성적으로 살기로 했어

 
opt:

1. to make a choice, esp. for one thing or possibility in preference to any others:

• Instead of a soft drink, she opted for water.
• He opted out of the health insurance plan (= chose not to be a part of it).
• Mike opted for early retirement.

 
sanity:

1.  the state of having a healthy mind and not being mentally ill:

• He'd been behaving so strangely that they began to doubt/question his sanity.
• to keep/preserve/retain your sanity
• His behaviour was so strange that I began to doubt his sanity.

Scene 3

(운동 가자는 모니카에게 한마디 하는 챈들러...)

Chandler: You know, I mean
그러니까 내 말은

you can't tell your parents you were fired,
because they'd be disappointed.
부모님이 실망하실까 봐 해고당했다는 말도 못 했잖아

(모니카의 호응)

And it's not as if you have
a boyfriend's shoulder to cry on.
게다가 널 위로해 줄 애인이 있는 것도 아니고

Monica: Well, no. But I...
그렇긴 하지만...

Chandler: I mean,
내말은
if it were me, I think I'd have difficulty
just getting out of bed at all.
내가 네 입장이었다면 침대에만 누워 있었을거야

 
a shoulder to cry on:

1. someone who is willing to listen to your problems and give you sympathy, emotional support, and encouragement:

• I wish you'd been here when my mother died and I needed a shoulder to cry on.
• A shoulder to cry on will help him overcome his sorrow. 
• She needed a shoulder to cry on.

회차 감상 소감 ▼
정말 인연이란게 있나봅니다. 줄리와도 쿵짝이 잘 맞는 로스였지만 레이첼이 진심을 드러내자 흔들리는 로스를 보니 말입니다. 로스와 싸우고 어두운 카페에 앉아 혼자 마음을 정리하는 레이첼이 안쓰러웠는데,  로스가 다시 돌아와 레이첼을 달래주면서 키스하고, 분위기가 바뀝니다. 그 모습이 인상적인 회차입니다.

... I am over you. And that, my friend is what they call closure. 술취해서 로스에게 전화해서는 이제 로스를 잊고 정리했다고 얘기하는 레이첼
*closure: the feeling or act of bringing an unpleasant situation, time, or experience to an end, so that you are able to start new activities.
I've sort of had feelings for you. 로스가 음성 메시지를 듣고 레이첼의 마음을 알아차리니까 솔직하게 이야기 하는 레이첼
