프렌즈 시즌2: 9화 영어 표현 blackmail, get in line, go along with

 

시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도 그렇습니다. 10회 시청을 목표로 8회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다.
이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 시즌 1부터 시작해서 시즌 10까지 한 바퀴를 다 돌고 나면 그만큼 아쉽기도 합니다. 이처럼 저는 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유합니다. ^^

시즌 2: 9화 "피비의 아빠" 줄거리 ▼

액자 속 모델이 자신의 아버지인 줄 알고있던 피비는 진짜 아버지에 대한 정보를 할머니에게 듣고 찾아나섭니다. 챈들러와 조이가 동행했는데 피비는 집 앞 메일함까지 갔다가 끝내 되돌아오고 맙니다. 만약 자신의 생각만큼 훌륭한 아버지가 아니면 어쩌지 싶은 두려움 때문이었습니다. 모니카와 레이첼의 집에서는 히터의 손잡이가 고장났습니다. 손잡이 재고가 없어서 다음주 화요일까지 기다려야 하는 상황. 마침 그날 저녁있을 크리스마스 파티는 열대기후의 뜨끈한 분위기에서 진행됩니다.

On Christmas, Monica, strapped for cash looks for tips from people using home-baked cookies, receiving mixed reactions. Phoebe discovers that the framed picture of her father that her grandmother (Audra Lindley) keeps in her apartment is actually the photo model. She tries locating her real father, then decides she is unready to meet him. Chandler and Joey delay Christmas shopping and end up scrounging gifts from a gas station. To win back Rachel, Ross asks her to make a list about him, and then feels offended when she calls him obsessive, among other things.

Chandler: You know, I remember my father
all dressed up ont the red suit...
어렸을 때 아빠가 빨간 양복을 차려입고

the big black boots and the patent leather belt...
커다란 검정 부츠에 반짝이는 벨트를 차고

sneaking around downstairs.
He didn't want anybody to see him
살금살금 숨어서 아래층에 들어왔는데

but he'd be drunk, so he'd stumble,
crash into something and wake everybody up.
잔뜩 취했는지 넘어져서 온 집안 사람들을 다 깨웠자

Rachel: That doesn't sound like
a very merry Christmas.
크리스마스를 제대로 망치셨네

Chandler: Who said anything about Christmas?
크리스마스 아니었는데?

Monica: No, if he doesn't like our cookies, too bad.
싫어, 내 쿠키가 싫은 건 안타깝지만
I am not going to be blackmailed.
이런 협박에 굴복할 순 없어

Look, if worse comes to worse,
it gets a little warm,
더위가 절정으로 치달으면
we'll call it a theme party.
그걸 파티 주제로 하면 되지

 

blackmail:

(관리인 트리거에거 뭐든 줘서 히터를 고쳐달라고 하라는 로스...)

Monica: No, I will not cave.
싫어, 굴복 따윈 없다고

Rachel: I'm with Mon.
나도 모니카 편이야

Ross: All right. You know how you say
I never seize the day?
나한테 하릴없이 시간만 죽인다고 했지?
Well, alright. Even though he's your super
I'm seizing.
너희 건물 관리인은 내가 해결한다

회차 감상 소감 ▼

아버지를 찾으려는 피비의 노력은 이후로도 꾸준하게 나옵니다. 만약 그녀가 부모님과 함께 사는 보통의 가정에서 태어나고 자랐더라면 어떤 인물이었을까요. 여전히 밝고 명랑했을까요. 가끔 저는 그런 것들이 궁금합니다. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was your mother’s idea, you know. She didn’t want you to know your real father because it hurt her so much when he left, and I didn’t want to go along with it, but, well then she died and, and it was harder to argue with her. Not impossible, but harder. 피비가 친아빠를 찾는 과정에서 할머니를 찾아가고, 피비의 엄마가 왜 아빠를 속이고 싶었는지, 할머니는 그 의견에 찬성하지 않았지만, 계속 숨길수 밖에 없던 이유를 알려주고 있다
...You don't just sort of seize the day. 레이첼에게 기분이 좋아질 방법이 있다며 자신에 대한 리스트를 만들어보라고 하자 레이첼은 이것저것 이야기 하다  기회를 잡지 못하는 로스를 표현한다
