1화 사회제도가 망가졌다

 

#비서실장은 세스와  언론의 관심을 돌릴 방향에 대해 이야기한다. 그리고 통 안에 갇혀있다고 표현한다. 

Seth : They're like a dog with a bone.

Chieds of Staff (Mars) : You know how to get a bone away from a dog, don't you?

Seth : I really hope you're not gonna say, "Shoot the dog."

Chiefs of Staff : We're in the barrel here.

*in the barrel : (slang) In an unpleasant or dangerous situation.

 

#커크먼과 함께 식사하는 자리에서 아론은 푸에토리코에 대한 이야기를 꺼내고, 에밀리는 언제부터 그렇게 푸에토리코에 관심을 가졌냐면서, 새 여자친구가 푸에토리코인이니 그렇지 않냐고 장난스럽게 묻는다.

Emily: Since when do you care about Puerto Rico?

Aaron: I care about all unincorporated US territories.

Emily: Right. Isn't your new girlfriend Puerto Rican?

Aaron:You keeping tabs on me now?

*keep tabs on someone/something : to watch something or someone carefully.

 

 

#예상치 못한 공석을 맞이한 커크먼 정부. 단테는 the system is broken 해시태그와 관련하여 열렬한 반응이 오는 것을 세스에게 알리고, 커크먼은 장소를 옮겨 시민들이 모여있는 장소에서 즉석 연설을 하게 된다.

Mr. Preisident : I',m not sure about this. What am I supposed to do, the speech?

Seth : Well, just feel it out when you get up there. Wing it.

Mr. President : "Wing it"? That's an interesting communications strategy, Seth.

*wing it : to do or try to do something without much practice or preparation.

2화 그놈의 빌미

 

#사우스캐롤라이나로 간 커크먼 캠페인. 미성년자의 결혼과 관련하여 에밀리는 한 마디 해야 한다는 입장이었고, 로레인은 하지 말아야 한다는 입장이었다. 머뭇대던 커크먼은 결국  한마디도 하지 않았다. 추후 에밀리가 커크먼에게 찾아와 털어놓는다.

Emily : Doesn't mean I'm letting you off the hook.

Once you're elected, you have to make good on it.

Mr. President : I will, I promise.

Thank you for understanding.

*be off the hook : If you are off the hook, you have escaped from a difficult situation.

3화 사생활

 

#비서실장 마스는 이지와 제약 산업의 어두운 면을 들춘다. 이지는 왜 많은 시간 동안 관련 법안을 건드리지 않았는지 묻는다.

Isi: I checked with Counsel's office. They signed off.

But my only question is, this law has been on the books for decades.

Why has no administration tried this

Mars: You know why.

Isi: President's willing to tick off Big Pharma in an election year?

*tick off : to make someone angry.

4화 역사를 쓰다

 

# 로레인은 광고가 필수라고 말하고, 에밀리는 요즘 아무도 TV를 안보니까 그 돈으로 온라인에 투자하자고 제안한다.

Emily : We need ads, but nobody's watching TV commercials anymore.

And since we need to get the biggest bang for our buck,

I think we cut our TV budget and triple our online sepnding.

Lorraine : That, actually, is not a bad idea.

*bang for/the your buck : if you get more bang for your buck, you get more or better results for the amount of money or effort you spend.

# 로레인은 모스의 캠페인 관계자 마일스와 일을 벌인다. 

Lorraine: Your voice-over is the icing on the cake.

Myles: Ah, all it took was a little ingenuity and electronic distortion.

*icing on the cake : something that makes a good situation even better.

#애론은 부통령 후보가 되어 신장 이식 수술 후 약을 필요로 하는 가난한 과테말라 소년 마테오의 모금을 주최한다.

Aaron: It's election season, and maybe you were thinking of kicking in a few bucks to the Kirkman campaign,

or Cornelius Moss or William Porter.

Now, instead, why don't you text "Mateo" to 70773?

7화 정체성 위기

 

#10대에 어린 소녀의 불법 이민을 도와준 혐의로 도마 위에 오른 애론. 이와 관련하여 입장을 밝히고, 커크먼과 로레인은 대화를 나눈다. 애론의 출마 티켓과 불출마 티켓을 두고 어느것을 찢어버릴지 장난스럽게 이야기 하는 상황이다. 사람 놀래키는 재주가 있네요 라고 해석했다.

Mr. President : You know which one to rip up.

(로레인이 off the ticket을 찢으려고 시늉하자)

No, not that one, the other one.

Lorraine : Oh, wow. You really ought to take that show on the road.

*get the/this show on the road : to begin an activity that has been planned.

8화 끔찍한 두려움

 

#비서실장 마스는 로레인에게 모스의 집권 시절 FDA에서 플래그카인드의 진통제를 절차 없이 승인해 준것에 대해 귀뜸하면서 증거를 건낸다. 약의 중독성을 알면서도 통과시킨 것이라고 덧붙이니, 로레인은 마스가 평소에 원칙을 잘 지키면서 이런 정보를 물어온 것에 대해 매우 좋아한다

Lorraine: Where did you get this?

Mars: Does it matter?

Lorraine: You don't usually color outside the lines, Mars.

But when you do, God damn it, it's sort of arousing.

*color outside the lines : To color outside the lines is an idiom that means to not follow the rules, to think creatively, to behave in an unconventional manner.

9화 중대한결정

 

#모스의 캠페인 관계자가 바이오테러와 관계 있다는 얘기를 하는 커크먼과 마스, 그리고 FBI 관계자.

모스는 에둘러 말하는 것을 지적하며 직접적으로 모스와 관계있는 것인지 묻는다.

 

Rachelle: Feds found someone solicited by Brunton to research and develop bioethnically targeted infections.

Mr. President : We've confirmed that?

Rachelle: NSA was brought in, and they've now tied Brunton to the deat terrorist, Momberg,

through phone records.

Mars: Do I have to tiptoe around the GOP elephant in the room?

Is Moss involved?

*tiptoe around : to avoid dealing with a difficult subject, problem, or person.

10화 진실과 후폭풍

 

# 대선을 하루앞둔 밤, 커크먼은 잠을 못 이룬다. 자신의 자질을 의심하며 초조해하는 커크먼에게 처제 사샤는 유권자들은 커크먼을 믿는다며 그에게 기도라도 좋으니 혼자 끌어안고 있지말라고 조언한다. 

Sasha: The voters believe you are. They're about to return you to office.

Mr.President : We'll see. The big question is, do I deserve it?

Sasha :Where's that coming from?

You should unburden yourself to someone, even if just in prayer.

Try to get some rest.

*unburden yourself: to free yourself of something that is worrying you, by talking about it to someone.
