프렌즈 시즌 5: 14화 영어 표현 get an edge, don't give away the farm

시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어 공부 하는 분들 많으시죠? 저도 10회 시청을 목표로 7회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있어요.

이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍습니다. 그만큼 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만하고요. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을  공유할게요. ^^

시즌 5: 14화 "비밀은 언젠가 밝혀지는 법" 줄거리 ▼
어글리 네이키드 가이가 이사를 가면서 로스는 그 집에 입주하기 위해 친구들과 둘러봅니다. 그 사이에 피비는 아파트 맞은 편의 챈들러와 모니카의 애정행각을 목격하게 됩니다. 너무 깜짝 놀라서 챈들러 앤 모니카!! 하고 소리치던 것을 레이첼이 달려와 막았습니다. 자신도 알고 조이도 아는데, 로스는 모르니까 조용히 해야 한다고 말입니다. 로스를 속이려고 같이 얼싸안고 호들갑 떠는 장면 굉장히 웃깁니다.

이로써 조이, 레이첼, 피비 세 사람이 알게 되고, 레이첼과 피비는 모니카와 챈들러를 골려줄 방법을 찾게 됩니다. 조이는 비밀을 지키는 게 싫증이 나서 그냥 말해버리고 싶지만 말입니다. 우선은 피비가 챈들러를 유혹합니다. 팔을 만지면서 꺄르륵대고 아주 가관입니다. 피비는 모니카 앞에서 챈들러의 엉덩이를 꼬집고 윙크하죠. 모니카는 눈치챕니다. 그들이 자신들의 관계를 안다는 사실을요. 모니카와 챈들러는 조이에게 찾아가 묻습니다. 그리고 레이첼과 피비 두 사람을 골려줄 방법을 찾습니다. 챈들러는 조이가 없으니 집으로 오라고 초대합니다. 한편 로스는 어글리 네이키드 가이의 아파트에 입주하고 싶어서 작은 머핀 바구니를 보내지만 경쟁률이 너무 세서 다른 방법을 모색합니다. 친구들은 어글리 네이키드 가이의 취미를 함께 하라고 부추깁니다. 

레이첼은 눈치챕니다. 모니카와 챈들러가 자신들을 상대로 장난을 친다는 것을 말입니다. 조이에게 물어보고, 그들은 서로 장난을 치기 위해 작전을 짭니다. 결국에는 서로를 골려줄 방법을 찾게 됩니다. 친구들은 어글리 네이키드 가이의 집에서 함께 누드 차림으로 있는 로스를 발견하고 식겁합니다. 챈들러와 피비는 장난 삼아 서로 더듬다가 결국 챈들러가 포기하고 모니카와의 관계를 밝힙니다. 특히 피비의 춤과 조이의 손기술(?)이 장난이 아니던 에피소드입니다. 

Ross applies for Ugly Naked Guy's apartment when he moves out, only to find there is fierce competition. While viewing the apartment with Ross and Rachel, Phoebe happens to see Monica and Chandler through the window, having sex. Joey is relieved that everyone except Ross finally knows and he no longer has to pretend, but Rachel and Phoebe want to have some fun by forcing them into confessing. Rachel suggests Ross strike up an acquaintance with Ugly Naked Guy by finding similar interests to win his apartment, causing Ross to employ an extreme method. Chandler and Monica finally confess they love each other, but want to keep it secret from Ross a while longer...but Ross soon finds out, causing another emotional outburst in front of his boss who just cleared him to return to work.

Joey: I'm sorry.
But, hey, it's over now, right?

Monica: Unless...

Joey: No, not "unless."
This must end now.

Monica: Oh, man, they think they are so slick 
messing with us.
But they don't know 
that we know that they know.

Slick :

(피비와 챈들러의 숨막히는 유혹전)

Chandler: We know that thing you said before?
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued.

Phoebe: Really?

Chandler: Yeah. Listen,
Joey's not gonna be here tonight.
So why don't you come over
and I'll let you, uh, feel my bicep.
Or maybe more.

Phoebe: I'll have to get back to you on that.
Okay, bye.

 *get an edge: to get or have an advantage in a particular situation
Joey, Do they know that we know? (조이에게 몬들러 커플이 그들이 아는 것을 아냐고 묻는 레이첼)
They don't know that we know they know we know. (몬들러 커플을 속이려고 작정한 피비)
Don't give away the farm. (레이첼이 피비 옷의 단추를 하나 풀고 하나 더 풀려고 하자 말리는 피비)

Not if I kiss you first. (피비가 키스한다니까 맞받아치는 챈들러)
Get off my sister!!! (어글리 네이키드 가이의 집에서 창문에 보이는 몬들러 커플을 보고 격노한 로스)
