프렌즈 시즌5 : 11화 영어 표현 put out fires

 

시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도요.  7회차 정주행 중인데요. 처음엔 무자막, 그 다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있어요.

이렇게 봐도 봐도 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유할게요. ^^

시즌 5: 11화 "새해 다짐" 줄거리 ▼

1999년의 새해 다짐을 세우는 친구들. 과연 그 다짐이 잘 지켜졌을까요? 로스는 매일 새로운 것을 해보고, 레이첼은 가십을 옮기지 않는 한 해, 챈들러는 개그를 치지 않고, 조이는 기타를 배우고, 피비는 비행기를 조종하고, 모니카는 사진을 더 많이 찍는 것들 말이죠. 특히 로스의 가죽 바지와 피비의 기타 레슨이 인상적이었던 에피소드입니다...^^

The gang make New Year resolutions: Rachel promises to stop gossiping; Monica tries to take more pictures of the group and be less fastidious; Phoebe wants to pilot a commercial aircraft; Joey wants to learn the guitar; Chandler must stop making jokes; and Ross wants to try something new each day. Phoebe's attempt to teach Joey the guitar ends badly. Ross encounters a problems when he wears a new pair of leather pants on a first date. Rachel receives a shock when she picks up the phone and overhears a conversation between Monica and Chandler.

Ross: (My god, these pants. I'm burning up.
Oh, god. She wants to snuggle now?
What, is she trying to kill me?
It's like a volcano in here.)

Are you hot?

Woman: No.

 

Snuggle :

Ross: They're still not coming on, man.
And the lotion and the powder have made a paste.

Joey: Really?
What color is it?

Ross: What difference does that make?

Joey: Well, if the paste matches the pants,
you can make yourself paste pants
and she won't know the difference.

• flour-and-water paste
• tomato/anchovy/curry paste

Phoebe: Okay, I'm gonna go to.
I'm gonna go to the airport.
I figured if I hang around there long enough...
someone's bound to leave
one of those planes unattended.

Rachel: Good luck, honey.

Phoebe: Bye.

I'm going to make myself happy. (신년을 맞아, new year's resolution으로 하루 한 가지씩 하지 않은 것을 해서, 올해 자신을 행복하게 만들겠다는 로스)
Fine! You go learn from your qualified instructor. (조이가 자신의 방식에 의문을 품고 다른 기타 선생을 만나러 간다고 하자 화가 나서 얘기하는 피비)
Your timing couldn't be better. I'm putting out fires all over the place. (식겁해서 문제가 있다고 찾아온 레이첼에게 이런저런 문제 해결하는 중이라며 안심시키는 조이)
*put out fires: 급한 불을 끄다, 즉 시급한 문제를 해결하다
Ross? You've been in there for a long time. I'm starting to get kind of freaked out. (로스의 가죽 바지가 올라가지 않아서 화장실에서 헤매는 동안 로스의 데이트 상대가 문 밖에서 대화를 시도한다)
