프렌즈 시즌6: 12화 high maintenance

시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도 그렇습니다. 10회 시청을 목표로 7회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다.
이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 그만큼 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 공유합니다. ^^

시즌 6: 12화 "원조 쟁탈전" 줄거리 ▼
로스의 조크가 플레이보이지에 실리고, 챈들러는 그 조크를 읽더니 자신이 원조라며 성을 냅니다. 누가 그 조크의 원조인지 챈들러와 로스는 쟁탈전을 벌입니다. 친구들과 커피하우스에서 어울리던 조이는 건터로부터 계산서를 받게 되지만, 지금은 일하지 않아 돈이 없다면서 못 낸다고 얘기를 꺼냅니다. 그러자 건터가 조이만 괜찮다면 여기서 일해도 된다고 제안하죠. 조이는 자신이 드라마에 출연한 유명인이기도 하고, 친구들에게 서비스를 제공하는 것이 민망하다며 거절하지만 보수도 만족스럽고 근무시간도 자유롭다는 얘기를 듣고 솔깃합니다.

여자 친구들과 함께 플레이보이지를 보던 친구들에게 모니카는 묻습니다. 우리 중에서 고를 수 있다면 누구랑 사귈 거냐고 말이죠. 레이첼은 모르겠다며 넘겼지만, 피비는 망설이지 않고 레이첼이라고 대답합니다. 모니카를 자극하는 말이었죠. 그 뒤로 모니카는 한동안 이것에 대해 생각하다가 피비에게 직접적으로 물어봅니다. 왜 자신을 고르지 않았냐고 말이죠. 피비는 레이첼에게 좀 더 기운 이유에 대해 말해줍니다. 그 과정에서 모니카의 경우 Highmaintenance 하고, 반면 레이첼은 mellow 하다고 소신 있게 말하고요...^^

Chandler is upset when Playboy prints Ross' joke; both claim they originated the joke. Meanwhile, Joey reluctantly takes a waiter job at Central Perk. When Gunther fires him when he closes the shop to go to an audition, Rachel defends him. Phoebe says she would choose Rachel over Monica as a girlfriend because Monica is high-maintenance, but also says that Rachel is a pushover, causing tension between the girls. Ross starts playing the keyboards again after much prompting from Phoebe. His musical compositions leave the gang aghast, except for Phoebe who thinks they are brilliant. Chandler's feelings towards Kathy reach a breaking point after they kiss. Guilt-ridden, he eventually tells Joey the truth and then vainly tries to fix things but to no avail. Joey is outraged by Chandler’s betrayal even though he is dating another woman at the same time.

Monica: Why would you do that?
Why didn't you pick me?

Phoebe: Fine.
The reason that I was leaning
a little bit more toward Rachel than you
is just, you know, you're...
kind of high maintenance.

Okay, let's go to lunch.

Monica: What? That...
that is completely untrue.
You think I'm high maintenance?
Okay, prove it.

Phoebe: No, you're right, you're easygoing.
You're just not as easygoing as Rachel.
You know, she's just more...
flexible and mellow. That's all.

 

High maintenance : 

1. : requiring a large amount of care or maintenance

• The high-maintenance "Dracula" orchid constantly needs high levels of humidity and cooler temperatures.

 

1. of a person : tending to cause problems or demand attention : extremely sensitive, demanding, or temperamental

• Playing the victim gets you absolutely nowhere, and it only makes you seem tiring and high-maintenance to your boss.
• He’s thinking about breaking up with his girlfriend. He said she’s just too high maintenance. 

 
Mellow : 

1. (smooth)pleasing because of being smooth, soft, or well developed and not too sharp, bright, new, or rough:

• a mellow flavor/tone

 

1. (relaxed)(of a person or mood) relaxed and pleasant:
   

• He looks mellow on stage, but he’s always tense before the show.

Scene 2

Rachel: Phoebe, we'd like to talk to you for a second.

Phoebe: Okay.

Monica: So, maybe I am a little high maintenance.
And maybe Rachel is a little bit of a pushover.
But you know what we decided you are?

Rachel: Yes, we are sorry to tell you this,
but you, Phoebe, are flaky.

 
Flaky:

1. behaving in a way that is strange, not responsible or not expected:
   

• The truth is actors are often flaky, unreliable and unstable people.
• The central character of the play is a flaky neurotic.

Chandler: Because you're the only one that can be fair.
Ross: Yeah.

Monica: I can't be fair. You're my boyfriend.

Ross: Yeah, but I'm your brother. We're family.
That's the most important thing in the world.

Chandler: Don't try to sway her.
I'm your only chance to have a baby.

 
Sway:
