시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도 그렇습니다. 10회 시청을 목표로 7회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다.
이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도 있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 그만큼 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유합니다. ^^
시즌 7: 16화 "그날 밤 런던에서는..." 줄거리 ▼
모니카와 챈들러의 결혼 주례를 맡게 된 조이! 스피치를 준비하면서 애를 먹습니다. 챈들러는 모니카가 런던에서 원래 만나려고 한 사람이 조이라는 걸 깨닫고 충격에 빠집니다. 한편, 레이첼은 벤과 놀아주면서 장난 몇 개를 가르쳐 주는데요. 벤은 장난을 가르쳐준 레이첼에게 쿨하다고 얘기하자, 레이첼은 몇 개 더 가르쳐줍니다. 동전을 이용해서 얼굴 한가운데를 가로질러 선을 긋는 법, 설탕대신 소금을 넣는 식으로 말입니다. 로스는 벤이 이런 실용적인 장난을 배우는 것을 싫어하여 레이첼에게 한 소리를 하고, 레이첼은 벤에게 하지 말라고 얘기하러 갔다가 의도치 않게 욕만 몇 가지 더 알려주고 돌아오게 됩니다. 세 사람 사이에서 장난의 레이스가 펼쳐집니다....^^
Rachel teaches Ben practical jokes, much to Ross’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Chandler becomes paranoid when he learns that Monica was actually planning to sleep with Joey the night they first got together, and Joey becomes ordained over the Internet in preparation to officiate Monica’s and Chandler's wedding.
Scene 1
Phoebe: You should have one of us do it.
Monica: Phoebe, we're getting "married" married,
not "6th-grade" married.
Phoebe: No, it's a real thing.
Anyone can get ordained on the Internet
and perform like, weddings and stuff!
Ordain:
- to make someone officially a priest, minister, or rabbi in a religious ceremony
- He was ordained (as) a priest in Ely cathedral in 1987.
- In 1992, it decided to ordain women as priests.
Scene 2
Monica: Wow, you are really fast!
Chandler: It bodes well for me that speed impresses you.
Monica: We're gonna see each other naked.
Chandler: Yep.
Monica: You wanna do it at the same time?
Chandler: Count of three?
Bode:
- to be a sign of something good or bad for the future:
- This does not bode well for the future of the peace process.
- Both scenarios do not bode well for his academic future.
Scene 3
Rachel: Okay, do you rememebr all that stuff I taught you yesterday?
Ben: "rememebr all that stuff I taught you yesterday?"
Rachel: Don't do that.
Ben: Don't do that.
Rachel: Seriously. Your dad doesn't like pranks.
Prank:
- a trick that is intended to be amusing and often to make someone look foolish:
- She’s always playing pranks on her little brother.
- It is one of those prank calls again.
I have a bone to pick with you. (벤이 레이첼로부터 장난을 배운것에 대해 따지려는 로스)
What a nice surprise! (레이첼이 방문해서 놀란 캐롤)
Well, you know, I was just in the neighborhood, and I passed by your building, and I thought to myself, “What’s up with Carol and sweet little Ben?” 레이첼이 벤에게 장난 가르쳐주고서 로스가 와서 따지자 직접 벤을 찾아가서 집에 들어가기 전에 캐롤과 인사하는 장면. 캐롤이 여긴 어쩐 일로 왔냐고 물었다
Rach, You want some sugar in your coffee? (커피에 설탕 넣냐고 묻는 캐롤)
Just some milk would be good, Carol. (우유면 된다는 레이첼)
See, Joe, not that that's not great. (조이의 주례사에 대해 한마디 하려는 챈들러)
Did your eyes meet acroos the room? (어떻게 만나게 됐는지 몬들러 커플에게 묻는 조이)
Who did you originally want to hook up with? (원래 그날밤 누구를 만나려고 했는지 모니카에게 묻는 챈들러)
Hey! I'm a man of the cloth, but I still have feelings. (모니카가 그날밤 조이를 안 만나게 돼서 얼마나 다행인지 모른다며 챈들러에게 사과하자 자신도 감정이 있다며 얘기하는 조이)
*a man of the cloth: a man who is a priest or minister
We look at you, and we see you together, and it just... It fits. And you just know it's going to last forever. (속상해 하는 챈들러를 달래는 조이)
