프렌즈 시즌7 : 18화 cut someone some slack, tiptoe around

시트콤 <프렌즈>로 영어공부 하신다고요? 저도 그렇습니다. 10회 시청을 목표로 7회 차 정주행 중입니다. 처음엔 무자막, 그다음엔 영어 자막, 그리고 영어 자막과 한국어 자막을 켜고 보다가, 쉐도잉 하고, 어휘와 이디엄을 찾고 있습니다.
이렇게 봐도 봐도 재밌고, 새롭게 보이는 부분도  있고, 아직도 배우는 부분이 있다는 게 놀랍기도 한데요. 그만큼 <프렌즈>와 코드가 어느 정도 맞고, 꼭 반복해서 봐야겠다는 의지가 충만합니다. 서론은 줄이고, 공부하며 알게 된 어휘나 이디엄을 한 회당 3개 정도 공유합니다. ^^

시즌 7: 18화 "조이의 시상식" 줄거리 ▼

조이는 소피 어워드에 이름이 올라 김칫국을 마십니다. 그에게 레이첼은 만약 상을 못 탔을 경우를 대비해 상을 탄 배우를 축하하는 연습을 하라고 조언합니다. 결국 조이의 수상은 불발되고, 조이가 흥분한 모습이 고스란히 카메라에 잡힙니다. 참석하지 않은 동료 배우를 대신해서 수상을 하게 되는데, 수상 소감이 꽤나 엉뚱합니다.  

로스는 성적이 나쁜 학생을 불러 무슨 일인지 묻고, 그가 로스에게 빠져 시험을 망쳤다는 이야기를 듣게 됩니다. 자신이 교수계의 핫가이인지 기고만장 하던 로스는 뜻밖의 사실을 알게되는데요.  학생이 그에게 빠진 것이 아니라 그 학생이 이 사람 저 사람에게 써먹는 수법이었던 것입니다. 

Joey proves to be a sore loser after being nominated for a "Soapie" award. When he accepts an award from a different category on behalf of a co-star, he is unwilling to hand it over. However, he later keeps the award anyway when the actress who has won it considers it insignificant. Meanwhile, a male student in Ross’s class angles for a higher test grade by claiming that he loves Ross. Another student reveals that the guy is actually straight, and has used the same ploy on other professors. Ross then gives the student a failing grade, but ends up giving him a "C" after some of Ross's colleagues overhear a conversation which sounds like Ross and the student dated.

Cut someone  some slack 

1. to not judge someone as severely as you usually would because they are having problems at the present time:

• Because it was the last day of class, the teachers cut us some slack.

 

 

In the loop: 

1. : a group of people who know about or have influence or control over something

• She wants to stay in the loop as these changes are being considered.
• He claims that he was kept out of the loop when the decision to sell the company was being made.

Phoebe: We said goodbye at the door
so as not to flaunt our new love.
우리 애정을 티 내긴 싫어서 
문 앞에서 인사했어

Monica: Phoebe, it's okay.

피비, 괜찮아
내 눈치 볼 필요 없어
I've been thinking about it,
and you know what?
내가 생각을 해 봤거든

flaunt:

1. to intentionally make obvious something you have in order to be admired

• You go to the mall and you see fourteen-year-old kids flaunting money their parents give them.
• We don't have to flaunt it. 

 

tiptoe around:

1. : to avoid talking about (something) : to talk about (something) only in an indirect way

• They tiptoed around the subject of her poor health.
• You don't have to tiptoe around me.

   *don't sweat it: used to tell someone not to worry about something.
   *Can't make the gig? Don't sweat it; you'll have plenty more chances.
No, he's not! He's totally yanking your chain. (수강생이 로스를 속이고 있다면서 사실을 알려주는 학생)
Does this also mean that putting out doesn't get you love? (여기서의 put out은 'to agree to have sex'의 뜻으로 쓰였다. 피비의 대사이다)

Can I just tell you something? Very flattered, but, I’m engaged. 커피하우스에서 말을 거는 남자에게 단물 켜고 영광이지만 약혼했다는 모니카.

This is kind of embarrassing. I was actually coming over to talk to your friend. 그러나 그는 함께 앉은 피비에게 관심이 있던 상황이었다.

Look, for me the rush is knowing that we are going to be together for the rest of our lives. (결혼을 해서 더이상 새로운 사람과 관계를 가질 수 없는 것에 대해 놀랍지 않느냐며 묻는 모니카에게 챈들러는 이야기한다.'the rush' 대목)
I'm going to have a lot of new things with you. (챈들러와 많은 것을 새롭게 하게 되어 신난 모니카. 챈들러가 차분하게 얘기를 잘해주었다)
